Ninja turtle ooze

T has a Ninja turtle themed party next month. Today we made the ooze as favours for the kids from his class. Here's the recipe:

- PVA glue- either two small 4 oz bottles, or one large 7 oz
- 1 Teaspoon of Borax - found in the laundry section ( I got my bag off trade me)
- Green Food Coloring
- 1/2 Cup Warm Water
- Large Mixing Bowl and Spoon
- Air-tight Container
- Labels

1. Squeeze the glue bottles into the large mixing bowl.

2. Fill the empty glue bottles with water, swish it around, and pour into the bowl with the glue.

3. Stir well and add food coloring to create desired color.  In our case, of course, that color is GREEN!

4. In a different container, spoon 1 tsp of borax into 1/2 cup warm water and stir.  There will be some borax in the bottom of the water, that’s ok!

Step 5: SLOWLY start to add the water to the glue mixture-make sure none of the borax granules get into the mixture. Add a little, mix with your hands, add a little, mix with your hands. You’ll be surprised how quickly it starts to form, so don’t add a lot of water all at once. Keep mixing with your hands until it isn’t sticky anymore.

3 years on

A letter I wrote to the kids a few days after...

Today was the scariest day of your mum's life. We had another earthquake, a 6.4 that caused a lot of damage to our city, homes and to people.

I was at the letter box when it happened. You were inside on your own. I fell three times trying to stay upright and get back to you. I will never forget what the grass looked like and how the trees moved. It rolled like someone was shaking and pulling a thick green mat out from under me.

T, I knew you were in your bed. I stood in the hall by your room where I could see you in the lounge M. You were  sitting on the couch as it shook, you looked more confused than scared in that moment.

You ran to me and we both went into T's room. Your whole body shook when I held you T, I think you must have been asleep but had been woken by the noise. You were very scared.

I'm so glad I moved your drawers away from your bed as they had fallen over. Later you said " The earthquake broke my bedroom".

We went to M's room after that because it was lighter, the block out blind on your room made it dark and it was making you both more scared. Less things had fallen down in M's room too. We hugged on M's bed and I put my body over you both when the aftershocks happened.

Dad wasn't with us, he was out of town for work. I had to be brave for you. It was really hard.

Grandad came to see very soon after, he was checking on our family and looking for Nana. We went with him to his house. We drove to Aunty Sean and Shelley's first but they weren't home. The drive was scary. There was lots of flooding, lots of worried people trying to get to their families and some power lines had fallen down. Grandad drove over one and I thought we were going to get hurt by it.

Sonny had run away but he hadn't gone far. Before we left I got him back, he was scared too. I put him in our bedroom but he cut his paw on some glass so Grandad helped me clear the garage for him to get to his bed. I didn't like leaving him behind but there was no room in Grandad's car and I didn't want us to be at our house alone any longer. The street had flooded, yucky grey water was half way over our lawn and getting closer to the front of our house.

No one had power or water. We couldn't go inside Nana and Grandad's house as there was too much broken glass and damage. We all sat on the lawn listening to the radio and making phone calls checking that everyone was ok. My cell phone battery had gone flat. That wasn't a good feeling.

A few hours later Dad got to us, he had bought you some toys while he'd been away, you played with those in a tent that Nana had put up. He had been very worried and had driven without stopping. He told me that he drove faster than he normally does and that he passed some police cars that didn't try and stop him.

Later, when it got too cold we went home and we all slept in a giant bed we made by pushing all of our beds together. I held your dad's hand all night and watched you sleep. I cried thinking about the families that had lost people and about how lucky we were that those we loved were safe and unhurt.

I love you so much.

this boy I love

Walking home from M's school drop off the last week of term T stopped to pick a dandelion seed head. He blows on them to make wishes- doesn't everyone?

When he'd finished puffing away at it he saw that there were seeds still attached.

I watched him carefully put it back down on the grass.

Me " Why did you do that Thomas?"

T " There's some left, if I leave it here someone else can find it and blow their wishes"

aaaaawwwwwwww

I love him so much.

our boy and boxes

T loves boxes and could spend a day playing with them, in them and using them to build things. I have a large box I keep in the garage and we use it to collect smaller boxes, tubes, boxes and card. I cut off strips of masking tape for him to use to stick things together but he's very keen on using scissors so also does a lot of destroying cutting! I helped him find a piece of dowel to use as a fishing pole, cut out some fish shapes and put a metal paper clip on each. I tied string and a magnet to the fishing pole. Today his sister is at kindy but when she gets home she'll be able to get into the boat we made and do a spot of fishing- I wonder if she'll be unlucky enough catch the boot? : )

arrgh odd socks- oh the shame!

fishing from his boat. That tissue box is his 'fish holder'

sigh

I'm having one of those days today. It's cold so any outside play is limited, we've had the play dough out, a play date with friends, we've baked, danced like crazy to Justin 'Beaver' and painted pictures. The boy decided it would be fun to empty his water bottle onto his sister's cd player and drawers- he went to tine out for that. While in time out ( which is held in our really boring for kids bathroom) he got naked, unrolled a full roll of paper and stuffed it down the toilet. I can't put him in time out for being naughty in time out so I just sat on the couch with him and closed my eyes, we're both calmer now.  I can also hear 'that' Beiber song playing for about the fiftieth time today so the obviously the cd player has survived too.

interviews

I really enjoy following ( and making) family traditions and as a result, building memories. We have some Christmas and birthday traditions already. One is an album with a photo of the children on their birthdays sitting on my favourite wooden chair. I love seeing how much they've grown over the years and I think it will be special to look back on as adults. Recently I had the idea to interview them every January as a sort of beginning of the new year tradition. I sat down with each of them and explained that I was going to ask them some questions and that they could have as much time as they needed to answer- no rush. They loved it and felt pretty important : ). I've printed them off and glued them into their pre school portfolios. Here's the questions I asked, of course you could adapt it to suit your family.

How old are you?
What color is your hair?
What color are your eyes?
What's your favorite food?
What's your favorite song?
What's your favorite treat?
What' s your favorite color?
What's your favorite animal?
What's your favorite book?
What's your favorite shop?
What do you like to do with Dad?
What do you like to do with Mum?
What is your favorite TV programme?
What’s your favourite movie?
Who are your friends?
Have you had a favourite holiday?
What's your favorite thing to do outside?
What's your favorite thing to play inside?
What do you want be when you grow up?
Is there a food that you think is yucky?
What are you good at?
What was your favourite Christmas present?
If you could have a wish what would you wish for?
