water beads

It's been a long time since I blogged. T went to an amazing science themed birthday party yesterday with lots of oozey foamy and explosive activities that he loved. In his goodie bag he got some mini experiments for at home and 2 bags of these water beads. You add them to water and over a few hours they grow to about the size of a marble. They feel great to play with so my big 6 and 7 year olds did some tray play today : ).

I asked them what animals they could use to play with the beads, they said ones that live in water and M chose a butterfly and T a penguin because they thought the beads could be those animal's eggs.

You can buy them online and they're very inexpensive. They're non-toxic and originally intended to put in plants to help retain water or look pretty in glass vases.

These kept my big kids happily playing for over an hour. I wouldn't actually recommend you used them unsupervised with young children as they could easily be put in wee mouths ( and non toxic or not- they're not meant to be eaten).
